About me, Omar Abunnaja

Hello! I’m Omar Abunnaja, a Fulbright scholar deeply immersed in the world of architecture and urban design, currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at the Illinois School of Architecture, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I started my academic journey at the University of Tripoli, where I graduated top of my class, imbued with a fervent passion for crafting spaces that enhance human connections and community well-being.

My architectural philosophy has been shaped by a blend of rich educational experiences and hands-on professional practice spanning Libya, Italy, and the United States. These diverse cultural and professional landscapes have nurtured my ability to adapt and innovate, which is evident in my wide range of projects—from revitalizing healthcare infrastructures to designing serene urban retreats.

During my internships at internationally recognized firms like HDR in Chicago and Sartorettoverna in Rome, I tackled complex architectural and urban planning challenges. These experiences sharpened my project management skills and deepened my understanding of integrating sustainable practices into dynamic design solutions. My commitment to excellence in architecture has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Victor A. Reigner FAIA Scholarship and the Graduate Design Excellence Award for every studio project I've undertaken.

Beyond the drafting table, I have actively engaged in architectural competitions, leading teams that reimagine the potentials of space and structure. These competitions have been a platform for exploring avant-garde ideas and pushing the boundaries of conventional architectural thinking. My research and leadership efforts have not only culminated in accolades but have also contributed to scholarly publications focused on sustainable and futuristic architecture.

At the U of I, I am refining my skills in a stimulating environment that fosters a critical understanding of architecture's impact on social and environmental contexts. Here, I continue to explore how architectural design can serve as a catalyst for social change and environmental stewardship. With each project, I strive to merge beauty, functionality, and innovation, creating spaces that resonate with their communities and sustainably enhance urban landscapes.
